Sunny Villa + Pool + Amazing Food + Beach (5 mins away) = Villa Shanthi
Less than a year old and this property is already featured in Vogue, UK for top places to stay in Sri Lanka. I couldn’t agree more!
Villa Shanthi is a luxurious and tranquil five bedroom hideaway in the famous beach town of Hikkaduwa on the South-West-Coast of Sri Lanka. Constructed in the typical Sri Lankan style, this spacious villa is cut off from the main Galle road. Lush green lawns, a well maintained swimming pool and some amazing homemade meals; Villa Shanthi is great for all types of travellers – singles, couples, families and groups of friends.
Picture this – wide pillared verandas, cool breezy balconies, hand carved doorways and lofty beamed ceilings are typical of most Sri Lankan homes. Villa Shanthi subscribes to that ethos, while still catering to the needs of a small hotel. The lush tropical garden has been designed by one of the most famous landscapers of Sri Lanka. I enjoyed my early morning dip in the pool just before a hearty breakfast in the patio.
Run by a German lady who manages her time between Berlin and Sri Lanka, the staff at the Villa are locals. They know the best cafes and restaurants for lunch, where to go snorkelling, and of course the lowdown on the party scene for the night. They go out of their way to make you feel at home, right from the complimentary tuk-tuk (what are Auto’s?!) rides to the main road to what you’d like to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A special mention for the Chef who made the whole stay so worthwhile. He is fabulous!
The low down on the rooms.
They have 5 rooms ( mix of double and twin sharing). Must remember that only two rooms have air conditioning. For the naturally cooled (yes, that’s polite for non-ac) rooms, in the month of January you’re ok for the nights. But to be honest day time the rooms are quite hot and humid.
Breakfast is a part of the package. Breakfast is usually the best meal here – try the Hoppers and Egg curry! OMG still drooling over it. As I mentioned, the Chef is a genius so go ahead and try the Continental dishes from the menu. Although our favourite meal was at lunch. They served us a typical Hikkaduwa fish curry with many accompaniments. The portions are so generous that two light eaters can suffice sharing one meal. Generally this rule of thumb holds true for other places in Sri Lanka where you’re having local food.
The black tuk-tuk parked at the entrance of the Villa is strictly for the guests and buying fresh ingredients for your meals. While they probably won’t be excited to let you ride it yourself, you can claim your complimentary rides. The caretaker Sam is going to be your best friend while you’re there. From requesting for beers, to bread, where to go snorkelling and getting dropped at 11pm for a party – he’s the man! And with his 1000 watt smile, there’s nothing Sam says no to.
Getting to Hikkaduwa
Most people drive straight to the beach town from Colombo airport – takes a little over 2 hours. The drive from Colombo to Hikkaduwa is short, but scores full marks for being scenic and giving you a taste of the local life. Cabs are easy to rent both from Colombo and Hikkaduwa.
Booking your stay
Insider Tip: The property is fairly new. As a result the owner is not charging full price for the rooms. It is slated to be in the $200++ rate per night category, so if you book now expect to get a really sweet deal. We got an unbelievable deal!
